The challenge
Workforce Planning helps specialty contractors visualize and manage crew assignments across complex projects. After acquiring LaborChart, Procore faced significant UX and accessibility issues within the product. Legacy code, inconsistent patterns, and an outdated UI created friction for field users managing complex construction schedules. The React-based CORE design system wasn’t compatible with many of Workforce Planning’s unique, data-heavy components — making this far more than a surface-level integration.
The approach
I led a strategic redesign grounded in deep user research with specialty contractors and project managers. Key initiatives included:
Simplifying navigation and workflows for faster task completion.
Reimagining Boards and Gantt visualizations for clarity and scalability.
Extending Procore’s CORE design system to support new, domain-specific patterns.
Validating improvements through iterative user testing and cross-functional alignment.
User journey map depicting a holistic view of the workforce scheduling process, the people involved, and the experiences surrounding that process.
High-level visuals used to tell the strategic vision and direction of the product.
Early wireframes were used to aid strategic and technical conversations.
The impact
Leading the design transformation of a complex post-acquisition integration, resulted in a seamless scheduling experience for construction teams — reducing friction, improving satisfaction, and rebuilding customer trust.
47% faster time-to-task across core workflows.
SUS scores up 30+ points (to 78 for new users, 86 for Procore users).
3 major contractors re-adopted Workforce Planning after leaving for competitors.
Established a scalable UX foundation for future workforce management features.
Workforce Planning enhancements included improved visibility, allocation capabilities, and smart suggestions across web and mobile.
The improved gannt experience addressed customer pain points with interactive drag and drop functionality, expanded timeline views, and bulk actions.
A scalable board view was implemented to give customers premium flexibility when scheduling large workforces across projects.
