Seamless construction workforce scheduling, at scale

Design system integration and a strategic UX overhaul of a construction workforce scheduling product brings improved customer satisfaction and sales through a dramatic decrease in time-to-task and improved SUS scores.

I lead all design efforts for Procore's Workforce Planning product, creating a robust design vision and executing in lock-step with an agile team throughout integration into Procore's platform and design system.

Over the course of the product and technology integration, the up-leveling of the user experience has resulted in increased customer satisfaction and adoption for Procore's Workforce Planning product line.

The Background

Product and UI integration

Procore is a construction management solution with 60+ tools, across web and mobile. Workforce Planning is a scheduling tool for specialty contractors to visualize and manage their resources across large projects.

Workforce Planning, previously LaborChart, was acquired by Procore in 2021. A complex technical integration was required on the backend, while the product and design needed a strategy to unify workflows and experiences across the platform.

The Problem

Poor user experience and frustrasted customers

Along with the acquision, came a less than desireable user experience with outdated usability patterns and major accessibility problems. A heuristic evaluation revealed severe usability issues across 4 critical tasks. And customers were vocal about the poor user experience and missing functionality.

Procore's robust design system, written in React, was not compatible with the legacy codebase. Plus, it didn't solve for each feature 1:1 - Workforce Planning's core scheduling capabilities and data visualization tools, such as the Boards and Gantt, were net new to Procore. It wasn't just a 'UI integration,' but more a strategic reimagining of the tool.

The Solution

Competitive strategy and seamless execution

Through extensive user research I developed a deep understanding of the customer, the users, and the construction workforce management space. In tight partnership with product and engineering, I designed an ambitious experience vision for Workforce Planning and created multiple artifacts to communicate the user problems and design direction.

Streamlined navigation and workflows, a simplified experience, and seamless interactions were all part of the vision. Designs included integration with Procore's platform experiences and a complete UI overhaul leveraging the CORE design system. Moderated and unmoderated user testing informed iterative improvements and validated the design vision.

The Results

Increased usability, improved satisfaction

The new user experience for Workforce Planning received extremely high SUS scores (78 for non-users and 86 for Procore users, an increase of approximately 32 points) and time to task has decreased an average of 47% across critical workflows. In addition, Procore has already had 3 large rebound customers sign up for Workforce Planning after leaving and trying a competitor, citing significant improvements made to the tool's design and usability.
